Island Resort Recap

Island Resort Recap

I’m back from the upper peninsula of Michigan. In spite of my flying in the middle of all the bad weather and air quality problems, my flight was unaffected and I am really glad to be back in San Diego for a couple of weeks.

Island Resort Championship

The Island Resort Championship was a great tournament with a beautiful course, lots of volunteers, cheering spectators and fun activities. One of the activities they host is the “Bassters Tournament.” The team that catches the largest fish wins $500! Unfortunately, as a rookie, I didn’t know only 15 teams could participate, so I didn’t get signed up in time. I’ll know for next year.

Tournament Rounds

My parents joined me for this tournament, which was about 2 hours north of Green Bay. My dad was on the bag and I had a great pairing with one player from the Philippines and the other from Australia. In round 1, I started out very well, with a birdie on the second hole. Unfortunately, I hit my drive in the water on both #5 and #9, which led to doubles. I was able to rally on the back with a couple birdies and ended up 3 over for my round.

Round 2 was an afternoon tee time and it was warm and windy. I birdied the first hole (#10) and was playing very well. After 10 holes, I was three under for the day and back to even for the tournament, which was the cut line. The greens were really firm at this point and I got a little unlucky – with a couple approach shots not holding and some putts hanging on the lip when they should have dropped. I ended up even for the day and +3 for the tournament, so I did not make the cut.

Since my flight out wasn’t until Monday, my parents and I drove up to Lake Superior for the day. It was a nice way to get my mind off missing another cut. We visited Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the scenery was spectacular. I highly recommend it! I even swam in the lake, which looked, but definitely did not feel, tropical. At 45 degrees, I did not stay in the water for long.

Back to golf

I am disappointed in my results so far this year. I don’t really know what to say – the competition is very tough, but I know I am good enough to play on this tour. I have one more tournament before the next reshuffle. The reshuffle moves players around based on their performance so far this season. Anyone ranked below me who has made a cut will move ahead of me in priority for tournaments. I’m already pretty far down the list, so I’m not sure which tournaments I will be able to play in following the reshuffle.

In the meantime, I have a couple weeks off. I’m spending a few days in the Monterey and San Luis Obispo area, including a round at Monterey Peninsula Country Club on the 4th of July. The next day, I’m back to work practicing and preparing for what’s next. I leave for Hartford for my next tournament on July 10.

I want to thank you for all your support. Your kind messages and good thoughts mean a lot to me!
